Cleaning a guardrail is not the same as cleaning a fence. The coating on a W beam system is engineered to resist corrosion for 15 to 25 years. The wrong cleaner, the wrong tool, or the wrong technique can strip that coating in minutes and leave bare steel exposed to rust. Most maintenance crews do not realize they are damaging the system every time they grab a pressure washer or a harsh chemical.
The cleaning methods below come from state DOT maintenance manuals, AASHTO M180 coating care guidelines, and field practices on highway projects where crews maintain hundreds of miles of guardrail without accelerating corrosion.
Why Standard Cleaning Methods Fail on Guardrail
What works on a house siding or a concrete wall will destroy a guardrail coating. The rail web is thin steel with a galvanized or polymer coating. The post has a different coating. The blockout is often uncoated steel. Using one cleaning method for all three surfaces guarantees damage to at least one of them.
Pressure Washing Strips Coating Faster Than You Think
Pressure washing is the most common cleaning method crews use, and it is the most damaging. A pressure washer set above 1500 psi will strip hot-dip galvanizing off the rail web in seconds. It will blast polymer topcoats off the posts. It will drive water into the post base where it sits against bare soil and accelerates corrosion from the inside.
Even at lower pressures, pressure washing forces water into bolt holes, splice gaps, and blockout interfaces. That water does not dry fast in shaded areas. It sits there for days, creating a moisture trap that starts rust at the exact points where the coating was removed. A crew that pressure washes a guardrail run on Monday will find new rust at every splice by Friday.
The rule is simple. Do not use a pressure washer on a guardrail system unless the specification explicitly allows it and the pressure is below 1000 psi with a wide-angle nozzle held at least 12 inches from the surface. Most DOT specifications do not allow it at all.
Chemical Cleaners That Eat the Coating
Household cleaners, degreasers, and acidic wash solutions are designed for thick surfaces like concrete or masonry. On a 12-gauge steel rail web, they eat through the coating in minutes. Acidic cleaners dissolve the zinc layer on galvanized steel. Alkaline degreasers break down polymer topcoats. Ammonia-based cleaners cause stress cracking in fluoropolymer coatings.
A crew that uses the same cleaner they use on the parking lot barriers will strip the guardrail coating within a season. The cleaning does not look bad at first. The rail looks shiny. But shiny bare steel rusts faster than dull coated steel. The cleaner removed the protection, not just the dirt.
Safe Cleaning Methods for the Rail Web
The rail web is the most visible surface and the one crews clean most often. It is also the surface most likely to be damaged by aggressive cleaning.
Hand Wiping with a Damp Cloth and Mild Soap
For light dirt, road film, and dust, a damp cloth with mild dish soap is the safest method. Wet the cloth, not the rail. Wipe in the direction of the rail length, not across the web. Rinse the cloth frequently in clean water. Do not let soap residue sit on the surface. Soap residue attracts dirt and holds moisture against the coating.
This method takes longer than pressure washing. It also lasts longer. The coating stays intact, the rail stays protected, and the dirt comes off without damage. For daily or weekly maintenance on high-visibility sections near interchanges or urban areas, hand wiping is the only method that does not trade short-term cleanliness for long-term corrosion.
Soft Bristle Brush for Stubborn Road Film
Road film is the black, greasy layer that builds up on the lower 24 inches of the rail web from tire rubber, oil drips, and brake dust. It does not come off with a cloth. It needs mechanical action, but not aggressive mechanical action.
Use a soft-bristle nylon brush. Not a wire brush. Not a steel wool pad. Nylon. Wire brushes cut into the coating and create scratches that become rust initiation points. Steel wool pads embed steel particles into the rail surface, which then rust and stain the coating from the inside.
Scrub the road film with the nylon brush using mild soap and water. Work in small sections, 2 to 3 feet at a time. Rinse the brush frequently. Do not scrub the splice area. The splice bolts and washers should not be submerged or scrubbed. Water in the splice interface accelerates bolt loosening. Clean around the splice, not on it.
Rubber Eraser for Tar and Bug Stains
Tar spots and bug stains are the two most common surface stains on guardrail. Tar comes from truck tires on hot pavement. Bug splatter comes from every insect that hits the rail at 60 mph. Both stain the coating and look terrible from the road.
A plain white rubber eraser removes tar and bug stains without damaging the coating. Rub gently in the direction of the rail grain. The rubber picks up the stain without scratching the surface. Do not use a razor blade or a putty knife to scrape tar. Scraping removes coating along with the tar, leaving a bare spot that will rust within weeks.
For heavy tar buildup, apply a small amount of mineral spirits to a clean cloth. Wipe the tar spot. The mineral spirits dissolve the tar without attacking the zinc or polymer coating. Wipe dry immediately. Do not let mineral spirits sit on the surface for more than 30 seconds. Prolonged contact can soften some polymer topcoats.
Cleaning the Posts Without Damaging the Coating
Posts are harder to clean than rail because they are vertical and the dirt accumulates differently. The base of the post is the critical area, and it is the area most crews get wrong.
Low-Pressure Water and a Soft Brush for Post Surfaces
For general post cleaning, use a garden hose on a gentle setting, not a pressure washer. Aim the water at the post from the top down so the dirt runs off instead of pooling at the base. Use a soft-bristle brush to scrub the dirty areas. Nylon brush only. Same rule as the rail web.
Focus on the area between 12 and 36 inches above ground. This is the salt splash zone on highways and the mud splash zone on rural roads. Dirt in this zone holds moisture against the coating and starts the corrosion process. Clean it every 30 days during wet seasons. Clean it monthly in coastal or northern salt-use areas.
Do not spray water directly at the post base. Water at the base drives soil into the post-ground interface and creates a moisture trap. Let the water run down the post naturally. If the base is caked with mud, use a hand brush to loosen it first, then rinse from the top down.
The Post Base Requires a Different Approach
The bottom 6 inches of the post is where rust starts. Cleaning this area requires care because the coating is thinnest here and the soil is most aggressive.
Use a hand brush to remove loose soil from around the post base. Do not dig into the soil. Just brush the surface. If there is orange staining on the soil, that is active corrosion. Mark the post for touch-up. Do not try to clean the rust off the post base with a wire brush. The wire brush will remove the remaining coating and expose more bare steel.
After brushing, apply a zinc-rich epoxy touch-up to any area where the coating is gone. Let it dry completely. Then backfill any soil that was removed during brushing, sloping it away from the post base. The post base must stay dry. Any cleaning method that leaves the base wet or exposed is making the rust problem worse, not better.
Stain Removal Without Coating Damage
Stains on guardrail are not just cosmetic. Some stains, like oil and chemical drips, eat the coating if left untreated. But the removal method must match the stain type.
Oil and Grease Stain Removal
Oil stains on the rail web come from vehicle drips. They look dark and slippery. If left alone, they hold moisture against the coating and start a slow corrosion process under the stain.
Apply a degreaser that is safe for coated metal. Citrus-based degreasers work well. Spray it on a cloth, not on the rail. Wipe the stain in small circles, working from the outside in. Do not scrub aggressively. Let the degreaser sit for 60 seconds, then wipe with a clean damp cloth. Rinse with clean water. Dry immediately.
Do not use automotive brake cleaner or engine degreaser on guardrail. These contain strong solvents that dissolve polymer topcoats. A citrus-based degreaser is strong enough to cut grease but gentle enough to leave the coating intact.
Rust Stain Removal From the Rail Web
When the coating fails and rust starts, the rust stains the surrounding coating orange. This is not just ugly. The rust is spreading under the coating.
For light surface rust stains, use a nylon brush with mild soap and water. Scrub gently. The rust stain will lighten but may not disappear completely. That is fine. The goal is to remove the active rust, not to make the rail look new. Removing all the stain requires sanding or chemical stripping, both of which remove coating along with the rust.
For heavier rust staining, use a phosphoric acid-based rust converter. Apply it to the stain, let it react for 10 minutes, then wipe it off. The converter turns the rust into a stable black compound that does not spread. It does not remove the stain, but it stops the rust from growing under the coating. Follow up with a zinc-rich primer touch-up over the converted area.
Do not use sandpaper or a wire wheel on rust stains. Sanding removes the surrounding coating and creates a larger bare area that will rust faster. The phosphoric acid converter does the same job without damaging the good coating around the stain.
Ink and Paint Stain Removal
Vandalism paint and marker ink show up on guardrail near urban areas and overpasses. They look bad and they can trap moisture if the coating is compromised.
For fresh paint, use isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth. Dab, do not rub. Rubbing spreads the paint. Dabbing lifts it. For dried paint or marker ink, use a magic eraser. The melamine foam lifts the stain without scratching the coating. Test a small area first. Some older polymer coatings are sensitive to melamine. If the test area shows any change in texture or gloss, stop and use isopropyl alcohol instead.
Cleaning Schedule That Matches the Environment
Cleaning once a year is not enough in most environments. The schedule has to match the exposure.
Urban and High-Traffic Cleaning Frequency
On urban roads and high-traffic highways, clean the rail web every 30 days during dry seasons and every 14 days during wet seasons. The dirt builds up faster because of stop-and-go traffic, brake dust, and tire wear. Posts should be cleaned monthly. Focus on the salt splash zone below 24 inches.
Rural and Low-Traffic Cleaning Frequency
On rural roads with low traffic, cleaning every 60 to 90 days is sufficient for the rail web. Posts every 3 months. The main concern on rural guardrail is mud splash and vegetation growth, not road film. Use a soft brush to remove mud before it dries and cakes on. Dried mud is abrasive and will scratch the coating if you try to scrub it off.
Coastal and Northern Salt-Use Cleaning Frequency
On coastal highways or in northern states where road salt is used, clean the rail web every 14 days during winter months. Posts every 21 days. The salt accelerates corrosion at every stain and every scratch. A salt stain left for two weeks can eat through the coating. There is no margin for delay in these environments.

Safe Tools for Guardrail Cleaning
Nylon bristle brushes in various sizes. Soft microfiber cloths. White rubber erasers. Plastic scrapers for dried material. Garden hose with a gentle spray nozzle. Isopropyl alcohol on clean rags. Mild dish soap. Citrus-based degreaser safe for coated metal. Phosphoric acid rust converter. Zinc-rich epoxy touch-up paint.
Tools That Will Damage the Coating
Pressure washers above 1000 psi. Wire brushes of any kind. Steel wool pads. Razor blades or putty knives. Sandpaper or sanding blocks. Acidic cleaners like muriatic acid or vinegar. Ammonia-based cleaners. Automotive brake cleaner or engine degreaser. Abrasive pads like Scotch-Brite.
Keep the safe tools on the truck. Keep the damaging tools off it. It sounds obvious, but most crews do not separate their cleaning kits. The same bucket that held the degreaser yesterday gets used on the rail today, and the coating pays the price.
