Surface Pre-Treatment and Contaminant Removal
Before any spray coating work starts, every section of W beam guardrail must go through a full surface cleaning sequence. All traces of rust, welding spatter, grease, and residual mill scale are removed using abrasive blasting or mechanical grinding methods. The surface is then wiped down with lint-free cloths to eliminate fine dust particles that could break the bond between the steel substrate and the coating. No visible moisture or leftover cleaning agent can remain on the surface before the first spray pass begins.
On-Site Environmental and Safety Constraints
Spray coating operations are only carried out when weather conditions stay within the acceptable working range. Ambient temperature must stay above the minimum threshold for proper coating curing, and relative humidity cannot exceed levels that cause premature moisture absorption into wet paint. Temporary enclosures or wind barriers are set up along open roadway sections to prevent over-spray drift and keep dust from the surrounding air from landing on fresh coating surfaces. All nearby vegetation and paved surfaces are covered to avoid unintended contact with spray materials.
Spray Application Technique and Coverage Standards
Operators hold the spray gun at a consistent, controlled distance from the W beam surface, following the curved profile of the rail to ensure every inner groove, edge, and mounting hole edge receives full coverage. They apply multiple thin, overlapping passes instead of one thick coat to prevent runs, sags, or uneven film build-up. Special attention is paid to the cut ends and welded joints of the guardrail, as these areas are most vulnerable to corrosion if coating coverage is incomplete. The spray pattern is adjusted dynamically to match the shape of the W profile, so no shadowed or hard-to-reach spots are left uncoated.
Curing Phase and Post-Coating Quality Verification
After the final spray pass is complete, the coated W beam guardrail is kept in a well-ventilated, temperature-stable area to go through the full curing cycle. Curing time is extended in cooler or more humid conditions to make sure the coating fully hardens and develops its designed weather resistance. Once the material reaches full cure, inspectors check every section for surface defects like pinholes, uneven texture, or thin spots. Random adhesion tests are performed on sample areas to confirm the coating will not peel or flake off under normal road service conditions.
