Pre-Inspection of Coiled Steel Before Straightening
Before any straightening work begins, every incoming steel coil for W beam guardrail production goes through a full pre-check process. Operators first uncoil the leading section of the steel strip to identify visible defects like edge burrs, surface rust patches, or uneven thickness that could affect later straightening performance. They also confirm the material’s original mechanical properties match the specified requirements, to avoid unnecessary stress that might cause cracking during the straightening sequence. Any strip with severe, uncorrectable warping is marked and separated before it enters the straightening line.
Multi-Roll Leveling Process for Flatness Correction
The steel strip passes through a series of staggered, precision-adjusted leveling rolls that apply controlled, incremental pressure across the full width of the material. This process gradually eliminates the internal residual stress left from the hot rolling and coiling stages, removing both longitudinal curvature and cross-bow distortion that would prevent the W beam from forming a uniform profile later. Operators adjust roll gaps in real time based on real-time flatness readings taken at the exit of the leveling unit, ensuring every section of the strip meets the required flatness tolerance before moving forward. No strip segment leaves this stage with visible waves or uneven bending that could disrupt subsequent stamping operations.
Edge Trimming and Surface Conditioning Post-Straightening
After the straightening step is complete, the steel strip moves to an edge processing station to trim off uneven, ragged edges left from the earlier slitting process. This step ensures the final strip width stays consistent across its entire length, preventing misalignment when the material is fed into the W beam forming press. Workers also perform a final surface wipe and light abrasive cleaning to remove loose scale and small burrs created during straightening and trimming. This fully prepared, stress-relieved strip is then ready to enter the continuous stamping and shaping stage for W beam guardrail production.
